In a study published in the British journal
The Lancet, researchers followed the eating
habits of nearly 12,000 pregnant women. The
subjects completed questionnaires over the
period of eight years following the birth of
their children so that researchers could track
developments in communication and social skills,
hand-eye coordination and IQ levels.
Scientists found a strong correlation between
consuming a diet rich in Omega-3 fatty acids
from fish and higher intelligence and
developmental skills. While this contradicts the
recommendations of many obstetricians (who
sometimes advise against seafood due to fears
about mercury) the study found no evidence of
increased harm.
For the ultimate in safety, it is advised that
if you are pregnant, that you consider only a
highly purified and highly concentrated fish oil
supplement. The supplement that you select
should be certified by a reputable oversight
agency like IFOS (International Fish Oil
Standards) to meet or exceed safety regulations
as outlined by the Council for Responsible
Nutrition and the World Health Organization.

health benefits of taking dietary fish oil
supplements, visit

In
the first large-scale study of its kind,
published in the American Heart Journal,
researchers investigated the health effects of
daily Omega-3 supplementation in combination
with a drug commonly prescribed for those
at-risk for heart attacks, angina and other
negative coronary events.
Patients who were identified as having higher
than average levels of cholesterol were divided
into two groups: a main group that included
nearly 15,000 participants with no prior history
of coronary artery disease, and a secondary
group with over 3,600 subjects with a prior
history of coronary artery disease. Some of each
group were given highly-purified fish oil
supplements in addition to a statin (a
prescription enzyme blocker that lowers
cholesterol levels in the blood by reducing the
production of cholesterol by the liver), while
others were given only the prescription drug.
Over the course of the nearly five-year study,
there was a significant difference between those
receiving the fish oil supplements and those who
did not. While both therapies proved effective
in reducing cholesterol levels, those taking
both statins and fish oil supplements had a 19%
reduction in risk for heart illness. The
researchers also noted that a similar,
preventative benefit may result from daily fish
oil supplementation for those not currently
deemed at-risk for heart problems.

One
of the cornerstones of our signature line of
cleaning products,
BioDeodorizer gets
rid of odors by digesting their sources. Use
this natural alternative to harsh conventional
cleaning products to eradicate odor-causing
substances, rather than simply masking the
smell.
BioDeodorizer is a groundbreaking product
because it utilizes friendly bacteria to
entirely eliminate organic wastes. It is
non-toxic, fully biodegradable, has a neutral pH
and contains zero harmful phosphates.
BioDeodorizer is
safe for use on tile and carpet, trash
receptacles, recycle bins, hampers and drain
lines! And if you have companion animals in your
home, you can use it to eliminate odors from pet
beds and pet accidents on carpet and grout, and
to freshen litter boxes too.
Each refill contains a 32 oz. bottle, so you can
simply re-use your existing heavy-duty sprayer,
thereby reducing the amount of plastic waste.

Findings
of a Duke University Medical Center study, published
in Environmental Health Perspectives, give
credence to the “developmental origins of adult
disease” hypothesis, which states that a person’s
prenatal experience affects their long-term health.
While not confirmed in human tests, preliminary
results indicate a correlation between prenatal
consumption of soy – in particular, the nutrient
genistein – and the risk of becoming obese.
When the pregnant mice in the study ate a diet rich
in genistein, their pups were significantly leaner
throughout their adulthood. This could explain why
Asian populations, which generally consume larger
quantities of soy than in other countries, tend
toward lower rates of not only obesity, but also
breast and prostate cancers.
The research also poses interesting questions about
the validity of testing on mice, which are generally
fed diets high in soy. The protective effects of soy
consumption may skew findings in many other tests
for the safety of substances for human use.

In the Journal of Clinical Oncology,
researchers investigated connections between soy
nutrients and breast cancer. The study measured
levels of isoflavones and genistein in nearly 800
Dutch women, half of whom had some form of the
cancer.
The study reports that high levels of genistein, one
of the nutrients in soy, were found to be
significantly correlated to lower incidences of
breast cancer. In the analysis, researchers reported
that the women in the study with the highest
percentage of genistein in their plasma had a lowest
risk of developing the cancer.

Napping May Help Your Heart
In a study of nearly 24,000 adults, researchers
found that participants who napped at least thirty
minutes a day, three times per week, had a nearly
40% lower risk of dying from coronary illness than
those who did not sleep during the day. So, if you
possibly can, take a siesta – your heart will thank
you!
